Carolyn Hanson is the Deputy Executive Director of the Environmental Council of the States (ECOS). Having served in this position for 16 years and at ECOS for over 22 years, she has extensive knowledge of state environmental agencies and their interactions with the federal government across multiple administrations. Currently, Carolyn’s work focuses on managing the organization, supporting cleanup of the nuclear weapons complex, and connecting states and federal agencies around scientific research. Over the years, she has worked on cross-media, chemicals, enforcement and compliance, federal facilities, sustainability, waste, and innovative technology issues.

Prior to ECOS, Carolyn worked at the National Science Resources Center at the Smithsonian Institution and as a high school chemistry teacher in Asheville, North Carolina and Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Carolyn holds a B.S. in chemistry from Davidson College, and a M.P.A. and a certificate in nonprofit management from George Mason University. She is originally from Florida but now lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her two hounds.
