Brian Maeck has had a varied career spanning over fifty countries in twenty years. He started his career in broadcast journalism in Canada, eventually relocating to England and Germany.
With a desire to get hands-on operational/technical experience, he later sought a career in the mining industry and worked as an underground mine operator. He transitioned into training roles, developing global training programs. After obtaining EHS credentials,
he rose to national and global positions, eventually residing in the USA.
Working for a global mining contractor uniquely put Brian in a position to work simultaneously alongside numerous blue-chip mining companies worldwide, directly collaborating with leaders at Rio Tinto, Newmont, Glencorp, BHP, Vale, Barrick Gold, Cameco
and Goldcorp (and many more); Brian experienced, firsthand various best-in-class safety systems. In partnership, a focused approach to fatal risk prevention was met with high levels of success.
In 2019, Brian was hired by Sims Limited, one of the world's largest metal recycling companies, as the Global Head of EHS. With a critical (fatal) risk management focus, Sims has seen a 46% reduction in recordable injuries and 58% reduction in lost time
injuries in four years.
