The Scottish nation recently rejoiced as Andy Murray hoisted the Wimbledon gentlemen's trophy. The 70-year trophy drought had finally ended and the United Kingdom could forget about its economic woes for a few days.

In an emotional post-match interview Andy reflected on what it took to reach this pinnacle and said, "I surrounded myself with a great team who helped me to learn from my numerous mistakes along the way." What a humbling admission from a hero in a sport that many see as a solo act.

I was reminded of the sage advise I was given years ago that "none of us is as strong as all of us." What, then, makes a team player?

Please allow me to list a few thoughts and get your reaction to them…
  • Make each other be right not wrong

  • Look for ways to make new ideas work, not for reasons why they won't

  • Don't make negative assumptions about each other

  • Take pride in one another's successes

  • Speak positively about one another at every opportunity

  • Maintain a positive mental attitude no matter the circumstances

  • Act with initiative and courage

  • Do everything with enthusiasm...it's contagious!

  • Never give up. Keep calm and carry on.

  • Enjoy the journey
Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American industrialist who led the enormous expansion of the steel industry in the late 19th century, reminds us that "it marks a big step in your development when you come to realize that other people can help you do a better job than you can do alone."
