Comcast’s David Newman Receives NAEM’s Leadership in Action Award
Mr. Newman was one of eight corporate EHS&S leaders recognized at NAEM’s Excellence Awards ceremony, which took place during the largest annual gathering for environment, health, and safety, and sustainability decision-makers — NAEM’s 27th annual EHS&S Management Forum.
“In his time at Comcast, David has transformed the EHS function and how we operate within the organization,” stated nominator Budd Batchelder, Senior EHS Manager at Comcast and a former direct report. Mr. Newman is being recognized for demonstrable environmental and safety impacts. He established a sustainability council for the Northeast Division of Comcast which led to numerous completed projects including: two large on-site solar systems (1 MW combined); LED lighting retrofits at 10+ locations that reduced energy consumption equivalent to 800+ homes annually; and, electric vehicle charging stations at 10+ locations available for use by Comcast fleet, employee vehicles and the public.
Over the past three years, Mr. Newman has championed Comcast’s Drive Safe program for the company’s fleet of 35,000 vehicles. Working with a technology partner to equip vehicles with distraction-limiting devices, Comcast has significantly reduced preventable crashes without impacting productivity or on-time arrivals. “My experience with David is that he has always been an innovative thinker in terms of EHS and striving to bring new technology and new ideas to bear to improve EHS performance,” wrote colleague Rodney Canada, Senior Director, EHS for Comcast’s Central Division, in support of Newman’s nomination.
