Christy Confar
Senior Manager, EHS & Sustainability
BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc.
Why did you join NAEM?
I am hoping to connect with other EHS&S professionals to expand my network and broaden my understanding of EHS&S.
What are currently working on?
Our company is rapidly growing, so I am working on developing the company's environmental programs, including those needed for compliance (e.g. air, water, waste, hazardous materials), as well as other operational needs, such as risk management, organizational structure, management systems and strategic planning.
What do you like about your job?
I enjoy pretty much all of it – staff development, operations, technical program management, EHS&S project management, risk management, strategic thinking, working internally within our department, and working externally with our various customer departments across our facilities.
What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
Management of change.
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of being afforded the opportunity to work with a great team of professionals where I have real influence with those that I manage as well as those that manage me.
What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
You don't need to know everything technically to have a great EHS&S career, but you definitely need to have people skills because the job requires a lot of collaboration and communication both internally and externally.
What do you like to do during your free time?
Play sports of all kinds (mostly soccer, running, ultimate Frisbee, tennis), or watch my kids play their sports.
